From 1953 to 1979, we were home to Joan Littlewood’s legendary Theatre Workshop Company, gaining international recognition with productions like “Oh, What a Lovely War!” and “A Taste of Honey.” This era solidified our reputation as a cradle for leading actors, writers, and directors, including notable names like Meera Syal, Barbara Windsor, and Cynthia Erivo. Our stage has witnessed performances that have shaped the theatrical landscape of Britain.
Under the artistic direction of Nadia Fall, Stratford East continues to break new ground. Our programming is bold and innovative, featuring a mix of reimagined classics, timely revivals, and groundbreaking new work. Highlights include a revival of “Equus” with seven 5-star reviews and a West End transfer, a powerful rendition of August Wilson’s “King Hedley II” starring Sir Lenny Henry, and engaging over 300 young people in “Noye’s Fludde” in collaboration with the English National Opera.
Our commitment extends beyond the stage to deeply engage with the community. We champion new talent and encourage participation from diverse backgrounds, nurturing a new generation of artists and audiences. Our theatre is not just a venue; it’s a cultural hub that resonates with the vibrancy and diversity of East London.
As we look to the future, our focus remains steadfast: to continue pushing boundaries in theatre while staying true to our roots. Stratford East stands as a testament to the enduring power of storytelling and its ability to reflect, challenge, and shape society. We invite you to join us in this ongoing journey of artistic excellence and social relevance.
